These periodic ramblings are written, produced and directed by Ronald Dale Karr, University of Massachusetts Lowell. Obviously, the opinions expressed here are my own, not those of the University.

BOMBS AWAY!

By bombing Saddam Huisen Bill Clinton has assured himself both stratospheric approval ratings and a BLOWOUT VICTORY in November. How can you stop a guy with a boyish grin who slams black welfare mothers and zaps diabolical foreigners? Never mind the fact that the U.S. action was illegal--hey, if we’ve got the might, we’ve got the right. Who cares about little things like International Law? It helps when you have a comic book villain like Saddam who is incapable of defending himself or in any way retaliating. (It would be amusing to see what would happen if we were to follow the same policy toward, say, China, Russia, Bosnia, or Rwanda.).

THOSE CRUISE MISSILES

sure are something, scoring direct hits on targets hundreds of miles distant guided by computers and satellites. Or at least that’s what the corporate media would like us to believe. I’m skeptical. After working for nearly a quarter century with copiers that jam, cars that won’t start, and computers that crash, I wonder how come this technology is so much more reliable than what the rest of us use. Would you get on a plane if you discovered it was controlled by Windows 95?

THE MESSAGE TO SADDAM

was also a pointed reminder to the Third World of the consequences should they be foolish enough to challenge their assigned place in the NEW WORLD ORDER. Behind the World Bank and the IMF and GATT lie the cruise missiles. They’ve gotten the message: resistance to global capitalism has all but ended, save for a few lonely guerrillas in forgotten jungles who haven’t heard the war is over.

MEANWHILE, BOB DOLE

is sinking fast, threatening to take his party down with him. Given how much changed the political map is from just 2 years ago, however, any damage to the GOP certainly will be temporary. There most certainly could be Republican in the White House in 2001, particularly since the Democrats don’t have an obvious successor waiting in the wings (Al Gore, Hillary?!?). Of course, the GOP also has a lackluster stable of candidates.

FLASH: IT’S THE ECONOMY STUPID!

A just released poll shows that a majority of Americans now think the economy’s fine. Fifty-nine percent say things are getting better, compared to 39 percent in May and--get this--29 percent in September 1992. By and large elections reflect the way voters feel about their own economic well-being or anxiety. Given the unabated corporate bloodletting and continuing rise in workers without medical insurance this seems hard to understand. Poor Bob Dole. He hasn’t a clue.
